내 오랜 친구, 어둠이여
I've come to talk with you again,
자네랑 이야기하려고 또 왔다네
Because a vision softly creeping,
왜냐하면 내가 잠들어 있는 동안에

어떤 환상이 자기 씨를 심어놓았기 때문이지
And the vision that was planted in my brain
내 뇌리에 깊히 박힌 그 환상은
Still remains Within the sound of silence.

In restless dreams
불안한 꿈속에서 자갈이 깔린
I walked alone Narrow streets of cobblestone,
좁은 길을 혼자 걸었지 가로등불 밑에 다다랐을 때
'Neath the halo of a street lamp,
차갑고 음습한 기운 때문에
I turned my collar to the cold and damp
옷깃을 세웠다네
When my eyes were stabbed
그때 반짝이는 네온 불빛이
by the flash of a neon light
내 눈에 들어왔고
That split the night
그 네온 불빛은 밤의 어둠을 가르며
And touched the sound of silence.
침묵의 소리를 감싸 안았다네

 


And in the naked light I saw
적나라한 불빛가운데서 만 명 정도
Ten thousand people, maybe more.
아니 어쩌면 더 많은 사람들을 나는 볼 수 있었다네
People talking without speaking,
사람들은 마음에도 없는 소리를 하며
People hearing without listening,
듣는 체 듣는 척만 하며
People writing songs that voices never share
심금을 울리지도 못하는 노래들을 부르고 있었지만
And no one dare Disturb the sound of silence.
그 어느 누구도 감히 침묵의 소리를 깨뜨릴 엄두를 내지 못했다네 

 


"Fools" said I,
그래서 나는 '바보들
"You do not know silence like a cancer grows.
암과도 같은 침묵이 자라고 있음을 당신들은 알지 못하나요?
Hear my words that I might teach you,
당신들을 깨우치는 내 말을 들으세요
Take my arms that I might reach you."
당신들에게 내미는 내 손을 잡으세요' 라고 말했지
But my words like silent raindrops
하지만 그러한 내 말은 소리없는 빗방울처럼 떨어져
fell and echoed In the wells of silence
침묵의 샘 가운데에서 공허한 메아리같을 뿐이었다네

 


And the people bowed and prayed
사람들은 자기들이 만든
To the neon god they made. 

네온 神에게 허리굽혀 기도했다네
And the sign flashed out its warning,
그러자 네온이 만들어내는 단어중에
In the words that it was forming.
경고의 문구가 번쩍이었지
And the sign said,
네온은 이렇게 말했어,
"The words of the prophets are written on the subway walls And tenement halls."
'예언자의 말은 지하철의 벽이나 싸구려 아파트 현관에 적혀있다' 라고
And whisper'd in the sounds of silence.

What is the "The Sound of Silence" about?
